"Reflecting on the Legacy of 1976: Soneike High School Students Commemorate Youth Day at Robben Island"

On 16 June 2024, our school  had the privilege of attending a commemoration event at the Nelson Mandela Gateway to Robben Island. Hosted by the National Heritage Council and Robben Island Museum, the event marked Youth Day, an important public holiday in our country.

During the event, we had the honor of hearing from three former prisoners of Robben Island – Seth Mazibuko, Thabo Ndabeni, and Mncedisi Siswana. These individuals were just 16 years old when they were tried and detained following the protests of 16 June 1976. Their stories provided us with valuable insights into the motivations behind the protests and how it continues to impact their lives today.

In addition to the former prisoners, we were also joined by youth activist Farah Abdurahman and author Noispho Khumalo (Hani), the granddaughter of the late apartheid activist, Christ Hani. The panelists engaged in a deep reflection on the events of 1976 and discussed the challenges that today's youth face. One of the key takeaways from the event was the importance of unity among today's South African youth. Like the young protesters of 1976, we must come together to understand and address the challenges we face. We should strive to find innovative ways to become agents of change in our society.

As we reflect on the lessons learned from the youth of 1976, we must also consider how we can apply their experiences to building and shaping the South Africa we want. Despite the different challenges we face today, there are still valuable lessons we can learn from the change-makers of the past. The impact of this event on our school community cannot be overstated. It serves as a reminder of the importance of unity and activism among our youth. We must recognize the social ills that exist in our society and work together to overcome them.

As students of Soneike High School, we have the power to make a difference. Let us be inspired by the youth of 1976 and strive to become change-makers in our own right. Together, we can shape a better future for South Africa.
