Soneike High School made history this week with its first-ever blazer ceremony, an event that officially welcomed juniors into the school community while cementing a new tradition for seniors.
The school assembly was filled with a mix of nerves and excitement as Grade 8s and 9s held their navy blue blazers, waiting for their turn. The Grade 12s, the school’s first-ever senior class, stood behind them, ready to place the blazers on their shoulders. Initially planned for only the Grade 8s and 12s, the event was later extended to include the Grade 9s, who had missed the experience the previous year. Grade 11s stepped in to welcome them, ensuring no student was left out.
The ceremony was hosted by Coach Turner, who guided the students through this great moment in Soneike’s history. As the ceremony unfolded, emotions ran high among both seniors and juniors. Nathan Titus- the Grade 8 RCL, shared his thoughts on the experience: “I felt nervous but excited. It was a big moment, and I was proud to earn my place in Soneike High School.
Standing in front of the seniors felt like a big responsibility, but it also made me feel welcomed.” For the seniors, this event was more than just welcoming the juniors—it was a moment of reflection. Geraldo Luis, the headboy of the school spoke about the impact of the ceremony: “I think this ceremony is important because it creates a legacy for both seniors and juniors.
Personally, as a senior, it made me reminisce about when I started high school. I got just a tiny bit emotional because this is our final year, and I felt a sense of joy for the juniors, knowing they have a great journey ahead of them for growth.” The navy blue blazers, adorned with two acorns, symbolize growth and the school’s motto, Lux et Auctus—“Light and Growth.”
This event was not just the start of a tradition but about installing a sense of pride and responsibility in every student who wears the blazer. As the ceremony drew to a close, the Grade 8 learners beamed with pride, their faces aglow with the knowledge that they were now an integral part of the Soneike High School family.
With their blazers proudly in place, they are ready to embark on their journey, equipped with the values, traditions, and spirit that will guide them throughout their high school careers. Teachers looked on with pride as their students took part in something that is expected to continue for years to come. The applause at the end of the ceremony wasn’t just for the students—it was for the beginning of a new legacy at Soneike.
