The Soneike High HESOP team recently participated in the Robben Island Freedom Camp, an enriching and transformative experience , one that we used to prepare our learners for the upcoming HESOP (Heritage Education Schools Outreach Programme) competition in August. This camp served as an important stepping stone in both their academic and personal development.
Despite challenging weather conditions, the learners, together with their coach, Coach Kuda, remained focused and committed. They used every moment on the island to conduct interviews, gather research, and engage deeply with historical evidence relevant to their HESOP assignment. The experience extended beyond academics—it became a powerful journey into South Africa’s history and heritage.
The programme offered a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for learners to grow as young leaders and ambassadors. A key highlight of the camp was the presentation of pre-tasks, where Soneike High proudly secured 2nd place out of 8 schools, demonstrating resilience, teamwork, and determination.
The team, consisting of Myolisi Mazoko, Azilia Arrison, Tanya Denhere, Likhona Makhwetu, and Precious Agbor, represented the school with pride and distinction throughout the programme. One of the most inspiring moments came from Precious Agbor, who was participating in the programme for the first time. She stood out among her peers and rose to the occasion with confidence and excellence. Precious was given the honour of reciting the Preamble of the Constitution in front of a packed auditorium, which included Robben Island executives and distinguished guests—an achievement that reflected both her courage and the strength of the Soneike team.
Learners were also privileged to engage directly with former political prisoners, gaining first-hand insight into the struggles and sacrifices that shaped South Africa’s democracy. These powerful interactions brought history to life and deepened their understanding of leadership, resilience, and service.
The camp, held from 25 to 27 April, has left a lasting impact on the team. Soneike High looks forward to building on this experience as they continue to grow and strengthen their programmes throughout the year.
