Soneike High's Karate Queen: Cleo Stephanus Reigns Supreme
Cleo Stephanus, a talented learner from Soneike High School, has made a name for herself in the world of karate, showcasing exceptional skill, dedication, and perseverance. Since joining the Kyokushin-Kan International Karate club at the age of 6, under the guidance of Shihan Gavin Smith at the Kuilsriver DOJO, Cleo has embarked on an extraordinary journey.
Cleo's remarkable progress culminated in achieving her 1st DAN Black Belt status at just 14 years old in 2022, earning her the esteemed title of Senpai (Senior student). This accomplishment serves as a testament to her unwavering commitment and hard work.
Last year proved to be a phenomenal one for Cleo, as she continued to excel in her craft. She received her Official Black Belt Certificate, ID, and Black Belt from the Kyokushin-Kan International Karate club in Japan in June 2023 and secured first place in the Full contact Unicity Provincial Championships.
Her winning streak continued with impressive performances in Western Province competitions. She won first place in the under 50kg and under 60kg divisions in September 2023 and emerged victorious in the Western Province Champion of Champions Tournament in October 2023.
This year, Cleo has maintained her momentum, achieving impressive results in recent tournaments. She secured 1st place in The Ikoku International South African Championships, demonstrating her skills on a national stage. In the Western Province tournaments of 2024, she took home 1st place in the first event and 2nd place in the second.
Cleo's impressive accomplishments bring honor and recognition to Soneike High School, highlighting the institution's nurturing environment for exceptional athletes.
